Phil,

Nice set. I picked up one at an open flea market in the Chicago area
real cheap. It may not be in perfect cosmetic condition, but knobs are
all there, plastic CRT cover is cracked, but it's got alot of
potential. If you do any chronology of the repair I, along with other
old TV enthusiasts, would like to see what it takes to get that old set
going, unless of course if it works already. If so let's all get
together and watch Uncle Miltie at your place.

Take care,

GB

Ha, ha -- surely you jest :-)

I will replace the power supply filter capacitors before even thinking of
firing it up. Based on all appearances, this set has not been under power in
a long, long time. After that, I'll keep slogging and take some photos along
the way.

Phil,
What I wouldn't give to be there to give you a hand with this
one. I'd love working on one of those babies. I've never done a TV before,
but I'm chomping at the bit to tie into one.

I have an RCA that looks a lot like this one....a few minor cosmetic
differences, but essentially the same form factor. It will probably take
me days to recap it once it gets its turn in the queue.

The lam stack on the power transformer is huge....was this a canadian model?

Sticker on the chassis sez made in the USA by RCA in Camden, NJ, 115 volts,
60 cycles.

Either way, this thing weighs a ton for a "tabletop" (85 lb. according to
the manual). The truck guy insisted on parking his rig out on the street. He
brought the heavy crates down our long driveway with a sort of mini
forklift, me following the whole way giving needless advice on when to slow
down and how to avoid driveway bumps.

I got my 630TS working after total recapping, but was never able to align it
properly. Thus the best picture and best sound do not occur at the same
fine tuning position. I have a good scope, but my post-marker sweep
generator does not cover the IF frequency they use, plus I think one would
have to have the proper crystals for the markers. I tried using a second
signal generator and counter to inject markers, but it did not work.

My restoration was complicated in that I had to replace the tuner - original
broken - got one from Harry Poster. That of course made IF alignment more
necessary!

Well, I'm still a long way from worrying about alignment. Today I'm making
up a parts order. Seven of the tubes were bad, and I don't have replacements
unless I go around the house robbing things from other restored TVs. (Well,
I may borrow some temporarily, while I'm waiting for the new ones to
arrive.)

Nice collection, by the way!

Impressive Phil. Doesn't look too bad, from a re-capping standpoint.
Plenty of room to work under that chassis. In most spots.

Have you checked the picture tube?

Terry.

No CRT tester in this house, apart from restored TVs that use the same tube.
I got a spare 10BP4 when I bought my Hallicrafters T-67, so if this one's a
dud, I'll just swap in the other one. Or, I could swap this one into the
T-67 if I was energetic enough to have two pulled-apart TVs on the same
workbench.

I did a brief yee-hah powerup on the variac late last night (I know . . .
but it's my TV now :-). At least these CRT filaments glow. With so many
other bad tubes in the set, you couldn't expect to see much else. I'm afraid
the seller's claim that it "showed a bright white line" was a bit of a fib.
With seven of the small tubes bad, and the CRT's high-voltage lead flopping
loose, it's hard to imagine it showing a white line any time recently. Oh
well, it's all part of the fun when you buy an old TV from somebody in a
crappy antique mall 1500 miles away!

Best of luck Phil. I've been getting the itch to do a TV recently, then reason
returns. ;)

Very nice. One thing that surprises me is how small the speaker is. I have
an old Emerson on it's factory stand, much like this set.........one of
these days maybe. My skills need to be better than they are at this point to
attack a tv.
