1952 Zenith radio phonograph combination? (kinda long)
(too old to reply)

I came across a Zenith radio phonograph combination with the cobratone
record player arm I guess it was, I believe it was made in 1952. The older
lady who owns it has the original booklet / users manual and the finish is
in absolutly mint shape, it looks like it has been in a time capsule since
the 50's as do the 78 RPM records I bought from her... anyway she wanted
some info on it, and so I searched around the internet and couldn't really
find anything on it. I did however find some reference to an old post on
this news group from 2003 in which someone had this same model radio /
phonograph and it was told to them that that model number wasn't even
listed, and when I went to nostalgiaair.org to look for a schematic that
model number was not found there either but apparently there are at least
two in the country with that model number even if it's not listed
anywhere...

the book lists it as Zenith model K1087 with chassis number 10H20Z and it's
approximately from 1952, it has an AM and FM radio on the right side of the
cabinet and a pull out cobratone record player on the left with a lot of
gold accenting and a really unique speed adjustment setting

I did find on nostalgiaair.org a Zenith model J1087 that uses the 10H20Z
chassis but no where can I find anything about model K1087.
--------
This is the post from another person who wrote on this group that I found on
the internet while searching up the chassis number which sounds exactly like
the radio this lady has:

Hi, I found a Zenith console type radio today in an old house, nice
condition

here is what clues I have:

1. in a wood cabinet 36" high, 34 1/2" wide, 15 1/2" deep
2. chassis number is 10H20Z
3. has phono player that flips out when left side door opened,
labeled "cobra-matic" with gold accents tonearm says "cobra"
and has little eyes
4. 10 tubes, including two 6V6 power tubes
5. 12 inch alnico speaker
6. purple switches on the both sides of the tuning glass labeled:
LOBASS, BASS, VOICE and on right TREBLE, ALTO, NORMAL
7. AM& FM concentric semicircular dials

anyone know anything about this beast?

such as date, quirks, value, rarity, history?

thanks for any insight,

azcowboy
-------------------------------------
and the reply that azcowboy got was:

Per the Zenith oracle, 10H20Z is not a valid chassis number in any of its
permutations.

Are you sure?
--------------------------------------

The Zenith that azcowboy is describing is the exact radio / phono
combination that this lady has down to every last detail, I pulled it out
from the wall and it was definately labeled as having chassis number 10H20Z
and exactly like he said it has a 12 inch speaker/ all the purple or dark
maroon buttons on either side of the dial etc... so this radio / chassis
combination does exist at least twice in the US but does anyone have any
more info on it at all? can anyone in any of the Zenith info find a model
K1087 ??

she was thinking of selling it and was thinking of asking around $200.00. a
receipt she has seems to list this model or at least a similar one at an
original cost of somewhere around $257.00 IIRC and I was just trying to find
out for her what it's worth might be if anyone actually knows anything about
this radio... I know value is highly relative but some kind of ball park
idea would be good...

for instance I'm looking for a 1948 bakelite admiral tv and some things go
up in value over time and some things go down. I think the tv I'm looking
for was originaly sold for around $279.00 yet they are not worth anywhere
near that anymore, they usually only sell for between $50.00 and $90.00 yet
an old zenith shutter dial may have sold for around a hundred when new yet
now sells for more than a thousand... so I'm trying to figure out if her
radio went up in value in the current market like the old zenith shutter
dials or did it go down in value like the admiral tv Im looking for....

I know this was kind of a long post but if you stuck it out till the end I
appreciate it,
Thanks,

Have you tried the Zenith Oracle website?
http://www.oldradios.com/reference/zenith.htm

Radio/phono combinations tend to sell for less than radios without phonos.
$200 might be on the optimistic side. A 10-tube Zenith should be a good
radio, but what you are describing sounds like a fairly normal postwar
radio/phono.

Incidentally, just because you can't find information on the Internet, that
doesn't necessarily mean that something is rare and precious. Many, many,
many radios are not mentioned anywhere on the Internet. Especially ordinary
radios that nobody feels inspired to write something about.

Just my $0.02 . . .

Dont see what the problem is, this is listed in SAMS as their packet
#151-13. I have that, email off line for a copy. THat SAMS is listed as
mid 1951. The J1087 would have been 1951model year, the K1051 is the 1952
model year
(beginning in 1950 Zenith used letter codes in the model # for the year. G
is 1950, H is 51, K is52, L is 53, M is 54, then they jumped to R, T and I
dont know what).

I saw one of those in an antique store. It was in storage on the second
floor and
not on the sales floor.....been a year or so ago and is probably still
there. I
can check on it if you like. It's located in Evansville, Indiana.

Thanks Bruce, I would love it, though I think Evansville Indiana might be a
little too far for me to drive to pick it up if it were for sale as both of
my family's cars have over 200,000 miles on them... though if you happen to
be passing by the antique store and happen to go in and happen to ask about
it, I would be curious as to what they might sell it for... but only if you
just happen to pass by as the chances of me getting out to Indiana are
pretty slim... Thanks again though.
