Discussion:
Mystery Lamp in a Philips B5X43A Radio
(too old to reply)

About a year ago, I purchased a Philips B5X43A table
radio. I have had pretty good luck with finding replacement
items, such as tubes/valves, misc hardware items, ect..

However...

The FM Stereo indicator lamp is burned out. It appears
to be a standard min screw base, but I can't figure out
what voltage the original lamp was. The number stamped on
it reads: "955/D6x50" made by Philips (naturally!). The
FM Multiplex unit that drives the lamp isn't working (at
this time)so getting a voltage reading just isn't possible. I
would rather just avoid the guesswork hoping someone can
give me some info.

Thanks!

If you have the schematic, check the supply voltage for the lamp driver.
That should be the max voltage. Ken

The Philips schematic for the B5X43A can be found here:

http://www.radiotechniek.nl/radiotechniek.php?image1=Philips&Searchitem=B5X43A&site=marioplace

You just have to become a member to download it. It's free.

Unfortunately, the schematic just gives that type number also.....and
I can't find it on the list of Philips dial lamp info at http://
www.datastress.com/~mario/radio/dial.htm

This is what I hate the most about Philips radios.

Many European radios with 6.3V tubes and E10 screw base can use a plain
#46 lamp (6.3V 0.25A)

Not as a stereo lamp in a Philips radio. It is drive using a germanium
transistor, maybe even with a current limitnig resistor in series.

Most Philips bulbs have a 4-digit code. From memory most stereo indicators
are 6,3V 50mA. You could post a question on the "Dutch Old Radio Forum".
It's mostly a Dutch forum, but they don't mind a question in English. The

the obvious modern answer is to use an LED with a series resistor

This guy has bulbs for most Euro radios, although he's located in
Germany -- but he takes Paypal:

I can recommend "Ask Jan First." I bought some components from them to
restore my Tesla Talisman. Good service, prompt shipment.

You can use Google's language tools to translate the German language pages.
