Our office will be purchasing an AED shortly. We are a multiple medical practice covering four states, and so have a long-term relationship with McKesson. Meaning I can get all the advice I want from their sales department, and that we have access to all brands.

Question: Has anyone *HERE* ever had the need to use such a device, service such a device or have any experience-based suggestions? A little bit of real-world experience might be useful. We are, generally, an older crowd, so perhaps.

Thanks in advance!

I have no experience with these other than seeing them pop up here in
YMCAs, restaurants, etc. in the past few years.

Check your local state Good Samaritan laws to make sure one can't be
charged if things go wrong. In Canada this sort of thing is covered by
law and so folks doing what seems right at the time won't be charged.

Looks like a good idea to have in your various offices. Does your
insurance give you a deduction if the device is present? A further
incentive.

Train a number of people, not just one...

The following link is for Canada, however the information is universal:

Thank you!

I have verified state requirements for training and "good Samaritan" laws. The actual practices need to have some training with the staff, as they are actual Medical practices - and we plan for that.

From another group, I received input from a long-term EMT that was immensely useful on the practical side.

Thanks again!

All I can say is get one that's easy to use. The faster you can get it
hooked up and working, the better. You still need to know CPR though.
I'd probably get one that has the option to manually shock the victim
as a last resort. (I don't know - maybe they all do). The AED should
talk to you - tell you to perform more CPR or get back wile it shocks.

Two times in 5 years my wife (who is a nurse) had to perform CPR when
we were visiting parks. One was a jogger. No AED at the park gift
shop. Took about a half hour for paramedics arrived. He survived.

Two years later a cyclist at a park in Canada - no cell service. By
the time someone just happened to drive by with an AED, it was too
late.

I wish I coould afford to just have one in the trunk of my car.
