Hello all.
I'm new to this and trying to identify and date an old magnavox
console am/fm record player that I just inherited,it plays
surprisingly well.
here: http://home.stny.rr.com/aconsola/pictures/
are a few pictures of the unit.
The model information tag is partially torn, and I am unsure if the
model number is incomplete or not. 2st274r is all that is there, and
it looks like there should have been more before the first 2.
Is it possible to date the unit with the serial number?
Anyone have any idea on worth?
anybody happen to have any literature on this model?
Thanks in advance for any info.

The model number appears correct but does not show up in the Sam's
Photofact index. Therefore, literature will be hard to find. The radio
chassis might have a number that might cross over.

It dates from about 1970, give or take a couple years. It's value is
probably little since it hasn't come into collector vogue yet. I've
seen sets from that era sell for $1.00 at auction. If it works and you
like it, enjoy it.

There's little value to these. A few years back I saw a working early 60s
top of the line Magnavox console color TV/stereo unit with all the original
paperwork and remote not sell at a consignment auction for $1. I would have
loved to take it home. Ended up rotting away out in the field behind the
auction barn. If I just had a truck back in those days...

If you like it and have room for it, keep it.

That can't be right. It is a tube based console, and by 1970, solid state
had long taken over. Since it is stereo, and doesn't appear to have FM
multiplex, I'd place it closer to 1960.

Anthony,

I believe the model number shows completely. I have a Magnavox
2ST654, very similar to yours that I bought new in late 1963 or early
1964. I have the papers and could look it up if necessary. (You can
look at mine here---> http://home.alltel.net/khoch/magst654.htm )
Record changer looks to be identical to mine and the dial and record
storage bin is very similar--just reversed from mine. The ST in the
model # means "stereo." Mine has the FM multiplex on it. At the time
the set was offered in a tube version, a solid state version, and
monaural and stereo versions. My wife and I chose the stereo tube
version because it was slightly less expensive than the solid state.
Glad we did because it still sounds great after 40 years. I have
never had to do anything except lube the turntable mechanism. Nice
find but not particularly valuable except for nostalgia's sake in my
situation. I would guess yours dates from about 1961 or possibly
1962.
