Not the manual per say, but 6 pages of reviews and the
schematic.

And an explanation as to why Heathkit manuals are now
hard to find online.

Thanks for the info.

I'm repairing a unit that has had the input selector switch mis-wired
from birth, and an assembly manual would be really helpful.

I'll keep looking.

Speaking of that, how is the new Heathkit doing? So much promise, so much
hype, they introduced a few products that didn't really represent the
Heathkit that everyone knew and loved, and then I've not seen mention of
them in a few years. I wonder if they are still making an effort, or if
they've faded away too?

They're still there
<https://www.heathkit.com/>
But, back "then" you could build something yourself and save 1/2
the cost of a commercial something.
Now, for example:
<https://shop.heathkit.com/shop/product/explorertm-am-trf-am-radio-receiver-solder-kit-black-case-gr-152-bk-backordered-25>
$149.00, I don't think so.

I looked after I posted. It's all been vague since the beginning, and the
fact that they havea website up but no real additions since the last time
I looked doesn't seem promising. The expensive power meter is there, but
I think I saw a line indicating it's still in the future. I fooled
myself with their clock, the title is similar to the one that sync'd with
WWV, then I remember it's not exactly the same title.

My brother has an original "atomic" Heathkit clock. IIRC, he said that the clock would trim it's internal time base every time it updated so it would be more accurate in times of poor reception. I do know it's been running since he built it with never a problem.

Somewhere I have an AR1500 receiver with a shorted power transformer (to the case). That was the only Heathkit we ever had that failed, at least catastrophically. I should try mounting the transformer to isolate it...

Some where in my mountain of useless ephemeral stuff, I have
a copy of a letter from Heathkit explaining that transformers
are the weakest link, more prone to failure than any other
component.

Were they speaking generically or specifically about their own transformers? I've seen *very* few power transformer failures in 50 years and only one SMPS transformer failure, and that was a badly attached winding to post connection which I repaired.

I was absolutely stunned to find that transformer shorted. That would have been the last part I suspected.

Most of the AC transformer failures I've seen were in 1960s low end audio where the undersized transformer would normally run scorching hot or low end vacuum tube TVs like Olympic or Westinghouse. There's no excuse for routine power transformer failures IMO.

Thoughts?

Well, the first version of the Heath ham radio modulation monitor 'scope
(HO-10), the one with the Apache/Mohawk paint scheme, was infamous
(notorious?) for losing power transformers.

The letter addressed one of their own transformers.
I thought it was hilarious that they claimed transformers
were _that_ unreliable.

That would be my assumption as well.

Zenith had a history of under-designing power transformers.

Thanks, yes, I have ordered one. Even with the extra $10 to mail it to
Canada, it's worth having.
