Get "Practical Radio Servicing" by Markus and Levy.
It's awesome. Step-by-step procedures for troubleshooting and fixing
sets. It won't teach you basic electronics, but if you have some
knowledge of that, it will become your repair bible.

(Out of print, but ask around and you'll find one.)

Well here is a list of a few books I consider necessary, others opinions of
course will vary.

1) Practical Radio Servicing by Marcus (As Ed Mentioned)
2) Elements of Radio Servicing by Marcus
3) Radio Trouble Shooters Handbook by Ghirardi
4) Elements of Radio by Marcus (This is the theory book companion to the
other elements book)
5) Modern Radio Servicing by Ghirardi

There are a host of others but these will get you going. I have tried to get
a copy of most 30's - 50's service type books. I have perhaps 40 different
titles, But these cover the most needed info. These are all of course long
out of print but show up on Ebay almost daily. You can also go to
www.bookfinder.com and search for them.

The Radio Troubleshooters Handbook is available from Ed (Blacksmith) who
mentioned Practical Radio Servicing in an earlier post, as a .pdf scan for a
very reasonable cost.

In my personal 'working' order:

1) Profitable Radio Troubleshooting by Levy/Marcus
2) Radio Trouble Shooting Guidebook by Rider
3) Practical Radio Servicing by Marcus
4) Elements of Radio Servicing by Marcus
5) Radio Trouble Shooters Handbook by Ghirardi

6) Modern Radio Servicing by Ghirardi
7) Elements of Radio by Marcus

- if you can read French add: 100 Pannes by Sorokine
- if you want read something about using test sets add
Advanced Radio servicing - Methods and Ideas - Beitman

Troubleshooting, Servicing, and Theory of Am, Fm, and Fm Stereo
Receivers
Clarence R. Green, Robert M. Bourque

The classic volume for Technicians and Hobbyists

This book, which was commonly used as a textbook in technician-level
electronics programs and introductory engineering courses, is perhaps
the best volume I hjave seen in explaining the basics of amplitude and
frequency modulation and demodulation, basic receiver design, and the
concomitant basics of audio amplification and reproduction. It is not
an all-around electronics text and you should understand basic AC and
DC electricity theory and use of basic test equipment before using it,
but it effectively teaches superheterodyne theory and alignment and
demodulation, covering both vacuum tubes and semiconductors. All radio
hobbyists and audiophiles should own a copy, but I would eschew the
facsimile in preference to an actual printed edition.

For a newbie-newbie my recommendation would be How to Repair Old-Time
Radios by Clayton Hallmark. From there one can continue moving upwards
to all the other fine texts mentioned.

There's one by John Frye called "Radio Receiver Servicing". It's written in
a matter-of-fact style. One of the best books I've ever read. You can find
a copy at bookfinder dot com.

No book is perfect so get several; you will soon be able to spot errors.
For example, several people recommended Elements of Radio by Marcus. I
have read the 2nd and 3rd editions and both are good. He generally gives
the right answers but sometimes for the wrong reasons. A case in point,
he attributes radio wave propagation to "ether" which had been disproven
50 years before the book was written!

All books have these anomalies, you have to learn enough to get past them
(and you will).

Good luck
